Beginning from the Xth century and onward Armenia, and all of Anatolia, Caucasus and Near East were flooded by hordes of nomadic Seljuk Turks, who after being kicked out of Central Asia, attacked the native peoples of the Near East. Many ancient civilizations that had managed to survive the assimilation of large empires such as Byzantium and Sassanian Persia, were destroyed and obliterated by the Turkish onslaught. The Seljuks, remaining true to their nomadic civilization destroying nature were very ruthless and barbaric towards the rich and thriving cultures like that of Armenia. In the Siwnik' Province of Greater Armenia, in the Monastery of Tat'ev alone, no less than 10,000 priceless, ancient manuscripts were thrown in the huge bonfire. The Turkish book burning campaign throughout Armenia destroyed centuries of knowledge and research, throwing back Armenia and the Armenian people to a Dark Age. The Armenian people fanatically fought to preserve any shreds of the remnants of civilization and culture. Scores of villages and towns would raise money in order to buy back some of the books taken by the Turks, who after a while found out that it is more useful for them to seize the books, and only kill the monks and villagers, afterwards selling the seized sacred texts to the remaining survivors, who risked their very own lives to have back the books and thus save Knowledge from eternal obliteration.

 Holy Echmiadzin, as other parts of Armenia were being abandoned, by large number of Armenian families, who were forced to leave their homes because of the constant raids and killings by the nomads. The migrations from Armenia increased in the XIth and XIIth centuries. Many families fled to neighboring Armenia Minor [Lesser Armenia] and Cilician Armenia, where decades later they would reestablish the Kingdom [Cilician Armenia became a Principality in 1080 -- and a Kingdom in 1199]. The Bagratid dynasty which ruled most of Armenia [Van-Vaspurakan and the surrounding areas were under the rule of the Artsrunis] from the IXth to XIth century also
