In 1920, after a bloody civil war in Russia between the Reds [Bolsheviks] and the Whites [Mensheviks, Monarchists, and other 'reactionaries' and 'counterrevolutionaries'] , the Bolsheviks came out as the victorious force, thus retaining the power that was seized in the October Revolution of 1917. After the civil war in Russia, the Bolsheviks in line with the grandiose plan of the international proletariat revolution moved on the neighboring countries, particularly those that were part of the former Russian Empire. The Revolution was exported to Armenia as well. The First Republic was never able to overcome a number of critical issues -- most notably that of the Turkish threat. Mustapha Kemal "Atatürk" by September of 1920 had amassed a huge Turkish army to the west of Arax River - an overwhelming force against the Armenian Republic in a very difficult period of its history made up of Genocide survivors stricken with famine and disease. The Turks by this period had seized the province of Kars [part of Eastern Armenia, formerly within Russian Empire -- the Kars-Ardahan province includes some of the most important monuments and symbols of the Armenian Civilization of global significance  -- including the historic ruins of the great city of Ani -- and -- the Holy of Holies - the Sacred Symbol of Armenia - the Twin Peaked Azat Masis-Ararat].

The Government of the First Republic, after not receiving the promised help from the Allies, had no choice but to surrender the government to the Armenian Communists, who had the backing of the might of Soviet Russia [the alternative was the unthinkable -- Turkish occupation and most probably the end of the Armenian people]. On November 29, 1920, the XIth Red Army entered Armenia and by December 2, was in control of most of Eastern Armenia, including the Capital.

The Republic of Socialist Soviet Armenia or Hayastani Soc‛ialistakan [[Ĕnkervarakan]] Xorhrdayin Hanrapetut‛iwn [in 1936 renamed -- The Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic -- ASSR -- commonly known as Soviet Armenia]  was proclaimed by the underground Communist Party of Armenia [CPA] on -- November 29, 1920 -- after the Red Army had the upper hand throughout most of Eastern Armenia. On March 12, 1922, the Republic of Soviet Socialist Armenia, became part of the Federative Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of Transcaucasia -- or the Transcaucasian SFSR [somewhat based on the previous short lived Transcaucasian Republic], which became a founding component of the Soviet Union on December 30, 1922.

The Armenian Republic remained part of the Transcaucasian SSR until December 5, 1936 -- when after the adoption of the new USSR constitution the Transcaucasian union as a geopolitical unit was dissolved and once again the Armenian SSR [one of 16 [[later 15]]  constituent republics of the USSR] became a separate political entity.

The Second Socialist Republic had a history of 70 years -- with its ups and downs, positive and negative aspects. Although, the early period of the 1920s and 1930s was a very difficult time, marred with purges by Stalin's henchmen, when millions of innocent Soviet citizens were killed in gulags, including tens of thousands of Armenians nevertheless, after the Stalinist era, the Armenians gradually began to rebuild and heal from the still very much open wounds of the Genocide.

The post-Stalinist period, was to a great degree a relatively good era of stability and progress. The Republic, forming only a small fraction of historic Armenia, with the hard work and ingenious minds of her people began to rebuild the land, in an era of rapid industrialization. The country underwent a radical transformation, rapidly changing from a rural agricultural backward country to a progressive high tech civilization of the workers state. The Capital quickly grew and expanded to the suburban areas. Tall buildings, wide streets and avenues replaced the shacks and narrow streets of old Ērevan.

THE HOUSE OF BOOKS. 1936. DESIGN BY ARCHITECTS N. MARKARYAN AND M. MAZMANYAN

The Armenian Civilization was fully blossoming and experiencing an unprecedented Renaissance. A very talented people, for centuries under foreign tyranny -- living in almost constant fear and uncertainty -- were for most part in a state of arrested development -- now they had a chance to build a new socialist society. New cultural and scientific establishments were found including -- new universities, institutes, the Academy of Sciences, The Matendaran -The Depository and Research Institute for the Preservation and Study of Ancient Manuscripts, theaters, museums, TV, Radio Stations, new publishing houses and numerous periodicals, and other important advances in the areas of socio-economic and political spheres were made during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s [this decade arguably marking the zenith of Soviet Armenia].

Stalin rewarded the loyalty of Armenians with a number of important programs, including allowing repatriation of some Genocide survivors from the Diaspora into the Armenian Republic. Unfortunately, the Stalinist purges of the late 1940s once again took the lives of many Armenians, including numerous repatriates. My eldest uncle [of five brothers] Andranik -- from my Father's side -- was falsely accused of being a "class enemy" -- since the Nazaryans have been a generational family of fine master goldsmiths and thus viewed not part of "the proletariat masses" -- quite to the contrary -- his family Knowingly left the relatively secure and comfortable "petty bourgeois" life in Aleppo for the challenge of working towards and creating the NEW ARMENIA -- expecting numerous hardship and struggles ahead [however not counting on being imprisoned or unfortunately for some repats executed].

His works include the most beautiful decorations, rings, penchants and earrings of delicate craftsmanship that have found their way into many private collections -- in 1949 he was thrown in a Stalinist gulag, only to be released years later, after Stalin's death, and as with so many falsely imprisoned -- "rehabilitated" and proved completely innocent. Most repatriates like my Father's family were High Idealists and genuinely believed in the Idea of ARMENIA REBORN.

The Armenian people have indeed been reborn out of the ashes of the first genocide of the twentieth century. They still to this very day live with the pain of an unhealed wound. The Genocide of their ancestors is still shamelessly denied by the Turkish government. The international community, including the United Nations and the European Union have strongly condemned the ongoing genocide denial calling the Turkish government to come clean with its bloody past and join the community of civilized nations.

After the acceptance and apology, the Armenian people will forgive -- because that was, is and will be collectively the true nature and Essence of the Armenian Spirit -- striving for everything that is beautiful, noble and just. But the Armenian people will never forget the horror -- for no nation and no people on planet Earth must ever undergo something so monstrous that is -- genocide -- the most gravest crime against all of humanity. The Genocide Memorial to the innocent victims stands on Tsitsernakaberd Hill, in Capital Yerevan -- a solemn symbol of 1,500,000 martyrs. Right next to the Memorial is the Cultural Center Complex. Its design is like a reborn winged Phoenix -- Rising out of its own ashes of death as an eternal flame of Life and Immortality. The Cosmic Wheel never stops.
